Driving Higher Value-Added Economy

BioMalaysia & Asia Pacific Bioeconomy 2016 to further catalyse value-added economy in the Asia Pacific region.

Kuala Lumpur, 19 April 2016 – The most cutting-edge innovations and services in bio-based technologies will be unveiled at the BioMalaysia & Asia Pacific Bioeconomy 2016 from 31 May to 2 June 2016 at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. The announcement was made by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) and Malaysian Biotechnology Corporation (BiotechCorp), who will be co-organising the 14th edition of the region’s premier biotechnology event.

Speaking on this year’s theme, “Value Adding Our Economy Through Bio-Based Technologies”, Minister of Science, Technology & Innovation (MOSTI), YB Datuk Seri Panglima Madius Tangau said, “This year’s event will focus on strengthening the bioeconomy value chain in the Asia Pacific region. The chosen theme is in line with MOSTI’s focus in highlighting bio-based products as a source of new economic growth and enhancing its contribution to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). With an annual growth rate of 15%, the size of Malaysia’s bioeconomy is expected to be worth RM149.1 billion in 2020 and is expected to increase to RM181.2 billion in 2030.”

One of the highlights of BioMalaysia & Asia Pacific Bioeconomy 2016 is the Technology Showcase Pitching, which is a platform for innovative researchers from local universities to pitch their businesses to experienced and talented business professionals. BiotechCorp’s Chief Executive Officer, Dato’ Dr. Mohd. Nazlee Kamal said, “The pitching sessions provide the opportunity for more companies to acquire value added technologies developed by local researchers, which can bring high impact to the growth and productivity of the nation. As we are currently in the ‘Global Business’ phase of the National Biotechnology Policy (NBP), we want to push the bio-based industry players to continuously commercialise their innovations so they can increase their product exports and remain competitive in the global market. As of the third quarter of 2015, BioNexus Status companies have recorded export revenues worth RM594.4 million, an increase of 10 percent compared to the third quarter of 2014 (RM538.1 million).”

BioMalaysia & Asia Pacific Bioeconomy 2016 will also feature the Bioeconomy Innovation Awards, which honour scientists and researchers from universities, research institutions as well as BioNexus Status companies for their outstanding achievements in research and development of bio-based technologies. Co-organised by BiotechCorp and Academy of Sciences Malaysia, the awards allow qualifying universities and research institutions to receive Malaysia Research Assessment (MyRA) points from the Ministry of Higher Education.

Another special feature of BioMalaysia & Asia Pacific Bioeconomy 2016 is the open conference concept, whereby talks, business matching, product demonstrations, discussions and sharing of information are held in an open space to allow for a more accessible forum on exchanging ideas, updates and issues related to the bio-based industry. The event offers networking opportunities with international and local thought-leaders and decision-makers, the latest scientific and business updates from industry players, and meeting potential partners through business matching programmes. Other programmes include BioCareer activities, BioLab Asia, BioShoppe showcase and sales, as well as presentations and launches of products and services.

BioMalaysia & Asia Pacific Bioeconomy 2016 is expected to continue establishing its reputation as one of the most significant meeting points for international and local players in the bio-based industry. Occupying three halls, exhibitors are expected from Germany, Thailand, Poland, India, South Africa, and Laos. This year, the event is supported by platinum sponsors CJ CheilJedang (CJ) Bio and Arkema, silver sponsor Biocon, and bronze sponsor, Malaysia Debt Ventures (MDV). BioMalaysia & ASEAN Bioeconomy 2015 last year attracted more than 8,000 visitors, including international players from USA, Spain, Singapore, Australia, India, Taiwan and Nigeria, with 36 business matchings established.

BiotechCorp wishes to announce that the organisation is not affiliated in organising or promoting any other biotech-related events happening during the stipulated date organised by any private entity.
